Would I love it as much the second time around? I can answer that question with a resounding YES!This is the first book in the series, and sometimes first books can be boring with all the world-building and character development. NOT THIS BOOK! Richelle Mead effortlessly blends together the world of the Moroi, dhampirs, Strigoi, and the Academy with action and memorable characters from the very start. It was very hard to put this book down once I started reading it.The book starts with Rose and Lissa being taken back to the Academy in Montana. Two years prior, Rose had taken Lissa away from their high school, for reasons you’ll find out in the book. Once back at the Academy, the headmistress wants to send Rose away for taking Lissa. But after some persuasion on Dimitri’s part—one of the guardians sent to bring her back—she lets Rose stay subject to some conditions. Rose must stay out of trouble and take on extra training sessions in order to catch up. She assigns Dimitri to be Rose’s trainer. After arriving back on campus, it becomes clear that someone is targeting Lissa and Rose gets worried. Rose is further distracted when she starts to develop very real feelings for Dimitri.I must talk about Rose and Dimitri because it would be a huge injustice if I didn’t. In Vampire Academy, Rose and Dimitri start off as trainer/trainee (not really friends, but something else) but there is clearly a very special connection between them. Rose is the outspoken, witty, strong, and brave person who will do anything to protect her best friend. While Dimitri is brooding, honorable, and the strong, silent type of guy. Basically, he’s my favorite type of hero. Underneath it all is also this wonderful romantic tension that you can cut with a knife! This is where things get good, guys.“Did you see that dress?”“I saw the dress.”“Did you like it?”He didn’t answer. I took that as a yes.“Am I going to endanger my reputation if I wear it to the dance?”When he spoke, I could barely hear him. You’ll endanger the school.”I liked that the reason why they couldn’t be together was something tangible and concrete. It made sense. It is a rule at the Academy that guardians cannot be romantically involved due to the nature of their job—their job is to protect Moroi and they can’t put someone else ahead of that duty. And doesn’t that just bite the big one because, damn, these two would be GREAT together!I won’t go into the explanation of the world in this review because you can figure that out for yourself. However, if you find yourself leery of reading yet another vampire series, don’t because this series is really great. What I love so much about this book is how wonderfully Richelle Mead sets the stage for the rest of the series, while creating an engaging and exciting book that is freaking addictive. You have the subplot with Lissa and Christian, the danger surrounding Lissa, the budding something between Rose and Dimitri, and the dramatics of high school.If you haven’t read this series from start to finish, go right now! If you’re like me and have a weakness for amazing forbidden love stories with twists and turns, then Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy series is the series for you! I have always remembered the journey I took when reading through the books the first time and I cannot wait to feel it all over again.

I loved this book. I love how sarcastic and stubborn Rose is. I think she's my hero! I really wish I could be as BA as her. Maybe I'll start small by going to the gym and see how that goes...or not.Lissa was fine. A good supporting role. Nothing to love or hate. I like Dimitri. Not going to say love him but I do really like him.I read a lot of vampire books. And when I say a lot, it could be an understatement. So I find it's hard to get original with their names, their strengths and weaknesses, how they eat, what they eat, etc. I liked that this story didn't just copy every vampire stereotype out there. I love the creativeness.I've already read this whole series before I left this review so I will say that I read this whole series in 1 week, and didn't sleep at all. If you know me, you know how much I love my sleep. But this series was worth missing sleep for. It's for sure on my all time favorites list.

Robert G. Gallager is a Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the world's leading information theorists. The best intro to stochastic processes available, bar none [and I have seen a lot of them] - also a companion to his GREAT, FREE course on the MIT Open Course website. If you buy this book, plan to do the course - if you don't you are missing out on a massive amount of information.

Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications is very well written and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between intuition and mathematical rigorousness at the first-year graduate engineering school level. The book is a combination of the material from two MIT courses: (6.262) Discrete Stochastic Process and (6.432) Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation. Because of this, the book shares much in common with Prof. Gallager's previous textbook: Discrete Stochastic Processes (ISBN-13: 978-0792395836 published 1995). I would not recommend to those interested only in this sub-topic - and who already own DSP - to purchase this new textbook as not much new will be gained. Nevertheless, the new inductee into the stochastic process world will be well served by this excellent update.

When dealing with a very difficult or aggressive person, remember that even if you are confrontational on the outside, stay cool on the inside. When we see a person being difficult or acting aggressively, we often recognize external characteristics such as anger, excessive need for control and power, arrogance, manipulation, and defensiveness. On the outside, these expressions might seem intimidating and suppressing, as they are meant to be. But when we look deeper into the true nature of such behaviors, we will find that underneath the intimidating and difficult exterior, and behind all the hostile energy, is a set of much more vulnerable emotions. * Behind excessive, compulsive, or pathological anger, we often find a person whose inner life has sadness, pain, or grief. * Behind excessive and overbearing manifestations of control, manipulation, power, and arrogance, we commonly find a person who on the inside feels fearful, insecure, or inadequate. * Behind excessive defensiveness, we commonly find an inner vulnerability. Most people who are chronically difficult and/or aggressive do so because they have one or more of these vulnerable "core" emotions on the inside. The core emotions usually have something to do with certain negative experiences from the past. To the extent that a person is unable to face up and deal with his negative experiences, he can sometimes, unconsciously, decide to lash out at others in order to bring a sense of equanimity with his inner fear and pain. By hurting others through aggressive behavior, an aggressive person gets to feel better about him or herself, with the twisted satisfaction that someone else is also suffering. As the old saying goes: "misery loves company". In this twisted way an aggressors innermost feelings are validated, and he gets to feel better about himself and his own inner suffering. "When you get angry, Hell is born. Anger makes you suffer a lot, and not only do you suffer, but the people you love also suffer at the same time. "

Dr. Brand begins his book with the story of a mother who brought her lame little girl to see him. The mother explained how she first found out that something was wrong with her daughter: one day she went in to check on the baby in her playpen and to her horror, found her 'drawing' on the sheets with her own blood...the girl had bitten her fingertips until they bled and was now happily scribbling away! This little girl couldn't feel pain, and by the age of 11 she was a pitiful wreck living in an institution with stumps instead of limbs. Let me tell you this story drew me in right from the start! Dr. Brand's own incredible life experiences growing up as the son of medical missionaries in India, to his days of training in England as a medical student during the war, to his fascinating stories of pioneering work on leprosy, make this WELL worth the read. Add to that the philosophy he's developed on pain based on these experiences, and you may very well never look at pain in the same way again. His conclusions on what actually causes pain and what we can do to help us bear it or overlook it are also very interesting. (He became known as the "doctor with the brush" in his younger hospital days after he discovered that the sensation of brushing the skin of his night patients helped considerably decrease their feelings of pain.) There are so many anecdotes from the book I'd love to share but I'll try to restrain myself. :^) Let's just say this is the best book I've read for a long time, and you would not regret buying it.

It's too bad the previous title doesn't "hit you" as well, because it also describes very much what the gift of pain is. No one wants to be in pain, especially if it lasts longer than necessary.However, Dr. Brand's reflections about pain were gripping, and for a memoir-style, reflective book, it was honestly "unputdownable." I read the entire book in only a couple of days, and with the other many things in my life, that says a lot. If I had had nothing else to do, I expect I would have finished the book in less than one day. The first night I didn't give up reading until 1 a.m.!I am a chronic pain patient, and had read a quote from this book and researched, found the quote, and decided to buy the book. It was a fascinating read and I DO better understand referred pain at this point. Really much of what it said I have already learned as I've read research and papers, etc., about pain, when it is good, when it goes bad, and how the nervous system works.Pain IS necessary in day-to-day life. I would never argue that. What becomes a problem is when the nervous system somehow goes awry and leaves a patient in unending pain with no hope of it changing. I would LOVE to figure out the way to endure pain like the fakirs he described. Though I did do well with pain in my history (including walking around on a broken heel and fibula while awaiting ankle surgery for two weeks - the fibula was after the diagnosis and scheduling of surgery and I couldn't see a reason to bother an ER about it if it could heal with the rest when the surgery was done), when my illness struck I tried to approach my pain the same way and failed miserably. Was it age? The type of pain? I'll never be sure.This book can be damaging to the wrong type of thinker, though. In suggesting pain is SO GOOD for us, it could leave someone who has never experienced long-term pain with an uncaring attitude that assumes pain ALWAYS serves a purpose, except at end of life. I would disagree with this from my own experience. When pain limits life and whatever is causing it cannot be treated to prevent more pain, it is reasonable to medicate enough to return some quality of life to the patient(NOT to the extent that the person is pain free; there is always a delicate balance between quality of life and over-medication). To do otherwise is cruel and inhumane.

This book is wonderfully written. As a reader, I truly felt like I was there with Dr. Brand. This is a story that really makes one think about the fact that we, as human beings, all feel pain. We almost always see that pain as only a burden none of us wish to carry. However, Dr. Brand's story is about the hardship experienced by lepers in the mid 20th century which was exacerbated due to the absence of pain in their lives. Long after the individual had taken the medication that would arrest the virus of leprosy, they were still left with the inability to feel pain due to the damage wrought by the disease. This absence of pain is what caused all the serious infections and loss of limbs, etc. Incredible what he did to help these people.

I have not quite finished reading this book (though I've skimmed the last chapters and know some of their content), but I am so excited about it that I could not wait to post this review! Be forewarned: those reviewers who used the phrases "can't put it down" and "the dishes will stack up" and "a page-turner" are not exaggerating. Every day I look forward to the time when I can open this book again and read, and I have lost not a few hours of sleep staying up late to read just a little more.Paul Brand's account, expressed in Yancey's superb writing, of his investigation of the causes of leprosy and its devastating effects reads like a detective story, with pieces of the puzzle falling into place one by one. The stories of successes and failures are always placed in the context of the lives of real people. Brand's reflections on pain are never heavy-handed, always instructive, sometimes challenging, often humbling and awe-provoking.If you work in the medical field, as I do, I cannot urge you strongly enough to read this book!! It should be required reading in every medical school, nursing school and PT/OT school. I have already started to re-tune my approach to patients with pain a little, and I have begun rethinking my own pain of various kinds.Paul Brand was a compassionate genius of the highest order. I've never heard that he won a Nobel Prize for medicine or the Nobel Peace prize, but he should have. He applied his genius with sacrificial energy, enthusiasm, humility and humanity to helping "the least of these".I wish I had read this book sooner. I recommend it more highly than I can express.

A much different exploration of the meaning of painting is found in Elkins's Pictures and Tears. Elkins (Sch. of the Art Inst. of Chicago; What Painting Is) asks why some people cry in front of paintings. Using both historical sources and solicited examples, he spins out various generally unconvincing hypotheses. Admitting that he himself has never cried in front of a painting, Elkins fails to get to the heart of the matter. Noting that other forms of expression (theater, music, novels, film) are more likely to elicit tears, Elkins attempts to explain their absence in our own time as a peculiarity of the 20th century. The examples of contemporary tears that Elkins resents are largely self-selected (solicited through ads in various publications) and neither prove nor disprove his theories. A rambling and often obtuse style makes this already rather intangible topic even more slippery.
