From Publishers Weekly Cofounder of a Harvard Law School program on negotiation, Ury presents a five-step agenda to deal successfully with opponents, be they unruly teenagers, labor leaders, terrorists or international politicians. Strategies focus on self-discipline, or tactics for defusing the adversary's attacks, and suggestions for developing options designed to lead to a mutually satisfactory agreement. Defining negotiations as "the art of letting the other person have your way," Ury, coauthor of Getting to Yes , stresses the need to understand the other's character and motivation. With examples--including Iacocca and the Chrysler Corporation vs. Congress--he shows the advantages of curbing reactions and stepping back to restore perspective. The author's imaginative and persuasive reasoning, communicated to the "opponent" reader, serves in itself to validate his theories. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews Ury (Beyond the Hotline, 1985, and coauthor, with Roger Fisher, of the hugely best-selling Getting to Yes, 1981) has returned to the subject he knows best--this time focusing on the most difficult negotiating opponents, whose resistance may take the form of stonewalling, threats, and assorted dirty tricks. Where Getting to Yes used the catch phrase ``principled negotiation'' to describe its method, ``breakthrough negotiation'' is Ury's umbrella term here. He sees five potential barriers to success: the opponent's negative emotions, negotiating habits, skepticism about the benefits of agreement, perceived power, and, finally, one's own reaction to all of the four. ``Breakthrough negotiation'' offers a five-step response to the barriers: don't react, disarm your opponent, change the game, make it easy to say yes, and make it hard to say no. Readers familiar with Getting to Yes may experience d‚j… vu as Ury discusses developing one's BATNA (Best Alternative To a Negotiated Agreement) or counsels on the importance of knowing when to remain silent (his ``Some of the most effective negotiating you will ever do is when you are not talking'' in Getting to Yes becomes, here, ``Some of the most effective negotiation is accomplished by saying nothing''). But No is not simply a rehash of the greatly successful Yes; new ground is covered, the organization is clear, the writing is crisp, and the examples are timely, engaging, and appropriate (although not always new--e.g., a divorce settlement in which equity in a husband's house is substituted for child-support payments was also cited in the earlier text). Expert advice, even though not entirely on new ground. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

From the Inside Flap Dr. William L. Ury shows listeners how to overcome serious obstacles to negotiation. Whether dealing with an unruly teenager or an office bully, Dr. Ury's method will help listeners gain control in even the most difficult situations. Most importantly, GETTING PAST NO gets results.

Review

"A must read for all those interested in nineteenth-century Atlantic history."--Ugo Nwojeki, University of California, Berkeley "Rafe Blaufarb and Liz Clarke have created an innovative and engaging teaching tool for the transatlantic slave trade in the era of suppression. It combines exhaustive research with accessibility, offers a superb overview of the traffic, and provides extensive original documentation of one of the most dramatic and poignant incidents in nineteenth-century maritime history."--David Eltis, Emory University "Drawing together Kru sailors, Sierra Leonean craftsmen, illegal French slavers, British anti-slavery patrol ships, a corrupt Guadeloupe governor, and British and French politicians, Blaufarb weaves a remarkable tapestry of the historical forces that transformed the slave trade in the nineteenth century. Inhuman Traffick offers a beautifully illustrated panorama of the Atlantic World during the age of emancipation, one that will appeal to students and experts alike."--James Sweet, University of Wisconsin-Madison "The use of graphic histories in the classroom is becoming widespread, and Inhuman Traffick shows why they can work so effectively to engage students. Like all of the best examples of the genre, Inhuman Traffick tells a compelling story through a complex interplay of image and text--it will keep students reading, and learning, to the very end."--Randy Sparks, Tulane University "Inhuman Traffick is a tour de force."--Rebecca Hartkopf Schloss, Texas A&M University "We are treated to the historical equivalent of 3D cinema as Dr. Blaufarb hits us from all angles: a traditional narrative that is concise and accessible; an innovative graphic history that brings the struggle against the slave trade to life; and a selection of primary sources that underscores the painstaking process by which historians explore the past. This is a truly groundbreaking approach to history."--Philippe Girard, McNeese State University "My students will be delighted to have Inhuman Traffick added to their reading list."--Patrick Rael, Bowdoin College

This book serves as excellent introduction to the slave trade in antebellum America by examining a micro-history. The book is well written and illustrated, and includes all of the primary source documentation as well as walking the reader through the process of research and writing. It would make an excellent book to assign to kids in high school up through graduate school.

Interesting read and book was in good condition

Required reading for my Human Rights class. Love this book, beautifully written and illustrated, and very informative. Would recommend.

Good book. Slow shipping

Informational, though at the time reading this as a college class was languorous. I would have read this if someone gifted it to me for freereading or group reading out of class

Over dramatized book on the slave trade and the British's role in it. Accounts this one specific instance of a ship being capture but overall is a boring read.

Historical essay, graphics, primary-source documents, gives a glimpse into the Atlantic World slave plantation supply complex, the transatlantic slave trade, and what the Royal Navy was doing to interrupt and stop ships crossing the Atlantic with slaves in the hold from the West Coast of Africa. The subject material is important but I didn't completely care for the graphic format, though very well illustrated. Thank you.

This book was requested for purchase in my Western Tradition History class , and throughout my reading I found that this piece was a great introduction to the beginning of slave trade , and inside of the graphic novel portion was illustrated views on the inside of what actually transpired . However , great parts of this time was left out , and portions were altered which made this book less interesting to a certain degree . I do recommend one learning about the topic to read it , however , there are other books based on the same topic with further more insight .

This was a great resource for learning about rendering type on screen. It is probably the most useful for junior designers trying to understand the tenants of typography within the constrains of web development, and HTML and CSS. It is probably best read after Ellen Lupton's other book on type and it doesn't have a lot of information on layout, leading, kerning, etc.Happy typesetting!

This was a suggested text for my typography class, and I've never used it. Unless it's required, I would skip it.

When I downloaded this, it keeps saying that I need to update my Kindle software in order to view the book. I have the most current up to date version of kindle, in fact I haven't had the app for longer than a few weeks. I have no idea why it keeps doing this and I am thoroughly disappointed.

This is an excellent resource for graphic design. Great seller

Love it! Very good info

Cool book

As a web site manager, I regularly move between developing in CSS and HTML, designing, and copyediting. I was hoping that this book would explore digital type in depth and give some focused attention on an important area of not just web development, but other digital environments like billboards and kiosks.Instead, this book felt very ADD -- never lingering on one idea for more than a couple of pages and lacking good flow from one idea to the next. And unfortunately, the main body copy is in a bold or semi-bold typeface, which makes reading more difficult to begin with.Details:For example, the two pages on type anatomy and taxonomy (ascenders, descenders, etc.) don't hold anything new for designers. Plus, they come after "Web fonts: A short history" and "Rendering type on screen." Shouldn't a basic understanding of the parts of type come before talking about entire typefaces? And is it necessary to know the history of web fonts in order to work with type on screen right now? Another example: dropped right in between two sections on logotypes are two pages on working with color, and an attempt to summarize in one paragraph what makes a good logo. One huge omission: information on accessibility. The problem is that Lupton's audience is too broad: Designers, Writers, Developers, and Students. That's quite a range of knowledge and experience to address. The book is full of pieces which speak to only part of this audience at any one time, such as storyboarding, indicating type hierarchy in CSS and HTML, drop shadows and gradients, icons and logotypes, and animating text. Not one of these sections is in-depth because each is limited to two pages (on average). Conclusion:I can see "Type on Screen" being a companion book to a class for student web designers. It's a quick and dirty overview of what can happen to type on a screen. But it's not for anyone wanting to learn how to make it happen, or why they should choose one treatment over another.

Great primer on how to use type on screen based devices. Highlights important concepts and shows many many examples.
