About the Author

Gever Tulley was fortunate to grow up in a world full of possibilities and adventures. He and his big brother were free to explore their environment and invent their own projects while growing up in the wide-open rural environs of Northern California and interior British Columbia. Their curiosity was encouraged by their parents, who instilled early on a sensible approach to their experiments. Terror and recklessness makes for mised opportunities to experience or survive adventure. Fear makes you cautious, but able to totally appreciate the moment. This book should be required reading and experimentation for all of those in leadership roles involving children, be it in the home, school, or troop leader.

My 12 year old immediately started reading this when it came in the mail. It has some really great things kids can do like licking a battery for instance, and learn from it. However, I thought at least half of the things were somewhat silly and shouldn't have been in a "Dangerous" things book. They are not really as dangerous as you would think. It is a fun book though so we are enjoying it.

Awesome sauce! Challenge yourself and your kids! This has helped me teach my son things I wish I knew at his age and has been a blast!

these are some thing that i grew up doing- not knowing they were so dangerous! my kids love this book, to look through and decide how daring they will be for the adventure! must have!

Bought this mostly because I loved the concept. The activities are fun, and each one explains to the parent why this is a good activity to do with your kids, as well as how to keep it reasonably safe. Activities are rated in terms of duration and difficulty, and each includes what materials are needed to stay safe. There is also a "supplemental facts" section for each activity that helps parents explain to kids what is going on. For example, in the "Stand outside in a hailstorm" activity, there is a paragraph on how hail is created and how it is studied.If you're a worried parent that wonders how far to let your kid go, this would be a good start. You can start off with easy, low-risk activities and then gradually choose more challenging ones as you and your child gain confidence.The best age for kids to use this book (in my opinion) is 6 to 10 years old. Older kids will appreciate some of the more difficult activities (like "build a bomb", which is all about chemical reactions and making a Ziploc bag pop). Younger kids will need to stick to the very simplest activities.Highly recommended.

While my mother and mother-in-law may not agree, I feel the activities in this book will not only be educational and fun for my son and I, but also aid in his development. If you have any further questions on this subject, I advise you to check out the author's TED talk that preempted his book.

In the fall of 1988, we taught a course on observation in the early childhood classroom, and therein we sowed the seeds of the first edition of Through the Looking Glass. We have found that learning how to observe while also paying close attention to what to observe encourages educational practitioners to use their skills to full potential. Because our goal in Through the Looking Glass is to integrate observation and child development within a professional context, we have included several helpful features in the text. As the material we wanted to include in Chapter 1 grew, we decided to develop it into two chapters for more manageable digestion. We are excited about the information about professional development in Chapter 1, including the reader's responsibilities and an introduction to professional organizations, developmentally appropriate practice, and ethical conduct in early childhood education. The second chapter turns to the more nuts-and-bolts issues of finding the time to observe, learning the basics of observation, and minimizing subjectivity. All our chapters now end with two reflections: one personal and one ethical. We hope these reflections will help our readers integrate information into their personal storehouses of knowledge and connect their daily work with our professional values as early childhood educators. Chapters 3 and 4, describing highlights of development during the preschool and primary grade years, have been updated and serve to establish a common ground of information for both knowledgeable and novice readers in the field of child development. Our "Growth Indicators" of child development from these two chapters are concrete guides to what to observe and are reprinted in Appendix A for easy access. In each chapter presenting an observational method, we offer two detailed examples, one preschool and one primary grade, to model how educators effectively study issues in classrooms, interpret the data, and initiate follow-through plans. Brief vignettes at the beginning of each chapter ask the reader to ponder a question or problem that anticipates the chapter's content. "Practice Activities" and "Off on Your Own" provide abundant opportunities to add to the reader's expertise in the observational process, and our new "Quick Reviews" at the ends of most chapters serve to underscore the major points.

This book is nothing short of this, it goes into our cultural paradigm that gives sex a negative association and how that affects our behaviors. The book came in brand new condition. Its not heavy so it is convenient to bring with for a thoughtful read to question our mundane life views. My friend had the newer version of this book, which was shorter and larger print and quicker of a read. I enjoyed this version more because it has enough content to get see how Osho expands in different topics which was very insightful.

Take your sex-life to the next level. A spiritual connection in sex makes an exponential difference. It is well-written, does not come off as preachy, or too "woo-woo." Truly mind-blowing... in more ways than one!

I'm only 3/4 of the way through the book, so take this with a grain of salt, but I really, really, LOVE this book. I mean, it's everything I've been looking for-and more. Osho explains things so simply. It's kind of like a how-to for sexual superconsciousness. Unlike one reviewer mentioned, he doesn't actually talk about sex not mattering. It's more of him saying that once you get to a certain point, you can achieve the same feeling as orgasm, without actually having sex.I'm almost done with it, but figured I had read enough to know that I love this book, and can't wait to purchase more of his works.

Grade 2 Up Recent retellings of Joel Chandler Harris' African-American folktales from former slaves have pruned the dialect and leave out Uncle Remus all together. Most notable of these is Jump!: the Adventures of Brer Rabbit (HBJ, 1986). This newest attempt brings together two distinguished children's book creators in a most unusual recreation. Lester has retold 48 of the folktales in standard English but with a strong feel for the dialect of the original stories. His retellings are as lively as the originals but they also have a liveliness of their own, as he incorporates modern allusions which never seem out of place. Even more importantly, he uses the sharp, witty Uncle Remus who narrated the original folktales, and not the more servile character from the opening and closing segments who many found offensive. Pinkney's illustrations are mostly black-and-white sketches with some full-color double-page spreads. They do not have the sass of the original A. B. Frost illustrations, but they are filled with strong interest and a great humor which serves the text well. This will be of great interest to school and public libraries as well as to storytellers as a source which gives new life to an American classic. Good "translation" from the dialect; each story roughly 2.5 pages long; just right for reading to a child (or oneself) at bedtime. These stories have gotten caught in pc battles, and that's a shame because they are part of our cultural literacy.

Julius Lester's retelling take all of the cheesy language and 19th century ideas of race in the Harris telling, and retells Uncle Remus' stories in a hilarious but respectful way. These are funny, entertaining and empowering tales. Hint: read the story to yourself and figure out the wording before reading it aloud.

The stories my grandma told me time and again as a child. Was so happy to find this book on amazon, and share the same stories with my children too. They are tried and true stories, that hold my childrens attention and they have fun listening to them.

I was brought up as a toddler listening to my mother read me the tales of Brer Rabbit. It may not be the most popular book on the market because of it's political correctness thing, but these characters are lovable and my grandson loved them. If you remember the Disney movie, "The Song of the South," it was made around the books' characters.
