Richelle Mead effortlessly blends together the world of the Moroi, dhampirs, Strigoi, and the Academy with action and memorable characters from the very start. It was very hard to put this book down once I started reading it.The book starts with Rose and Lissa being taken back to the Academy in Montana. Two years prior, Rose had taken Lissa away from their high school, for reasons you’ll find out in the book. Once back at the Academy, the headmistress wants to send Rose away for taking Lissa. But after some persuasion on Dimitri’s part—one of the guardians sent to bring her back—she lets Rose stay subject to some conditions. Rose must stay out of trouble and take on extra training sessions in order to catch up. She assigns Dimitri to be Rose’s trainer. After arriving back on campus, it becomes clear that someone is targeting Lissa and Rose gets worried. Rose is further distracted when she starts to develop very real feelings for Dimitri.I must talk about Rose and Dimitri because it would be a huge injustice if I didn’t. In Vampire Academy, Rose and Dimitri start off as trainer/trainee (not really friends, but something else) but there is clearly a very special connection between them. Rose is the outspoken, witty, strong, and brave person who will do anything to protect her best friend. While Dimitri is brooding, honorable, and the strong, silent type of guy. Basically, he’s my favorite type of hero. Underneath it all is also this wonderful romantic tension that you can cut with a knife! This is where things get good, guys.“Did you see that dress?”“I saw the dress.”“Did you like it?”He didn’t answer. I took that as a yes.“Am I going to endanger my reputation if I wear it to the dance?”When he spoke, I could barely hear him. You’ll endanger the school.”I liked that the reason why they couldn’t be together was something tangible and concrete. It made sense. It is a rule at the Academy that guardians cannot be romantically involved due to the nature of their job—their job is to protect Moroi and they can’t put someone else ahead of that duty. And doesn’t that just bite the big one because, damn, these two would be GREAT together!I won’t go into the explanation of the world in this review because you can figure that out for yourself. However, if you find yourself leery of reading yet another vampire series, don’t because this series is really great. What I love so much about this book is how wonderfully Richelle Mead sets the stage for the rest of the series, while creating an engaging and exciting book that is freaking addictive. You have the subplot with Lissa and Christian, the danger surrounding Lissa, the budding something between Rose and Dimitri, and the dramatics of high school.If you haven’t read this series from start to finish, go right now! I loved this book. I love how sarcastic and stubborn Rose is. I think she's my hero! I really wish I could be as BA as her. Maybe I'll start small by going to the gym and see how that goes...or not.Lissa was fine. A good supporting role. Nothing to love or hate. I like Dimitri. Not going to say love him but I do really like him.I read a lot of vampire books. And when I say a lot, it could be an understatement. So I find it's hard to get original with their names, their strengths and weaknesses, how they eat, what they eat, etc. I liked that this story didn't just copy every vampire stereotype out there. I love the creativeness.I've already read this whole series before I left this review so I will say that I read this whole series in 1 week, and didn't sleep at all. If you know me, you know how much I love my sleep. But this series was worth missing sleep for. It's for sure on my all time favorites list.

Robert G. Gallager is a Professor Emeritus at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and one of the world's leading information theorists. He is a Fellow of the US National Academy of Engineering, the US National Academy of Sciences, and his numerous awards and honours include the IEEE Medal of Honour (1990) and the Marconi Prize (2003). The best intro to stochastic processes available, bar none [and I have seen a lot of them] - also a companion to his GREAT, FREE course on the MIT Open Course website. If you buy this book, plan to do the course - if you don't you are missing out on a massive amount of information.

The book covers puts emphasis on the application side of stochastic process.

Stochastic Processes: Theory for Applications is very well written and does an excellent job of bridging the gap between intuition and mathematical rigorousness at the first-year graduate engineering school level. The book is a combination of the material from two MIT courses: (6.262) Discrete Stochastic Process and (6.432) Stochastic Processes, Detection, and Estimation. Because of this, the book shares much in common with Prof. Gallager's previous textbook: Discrete Stochastic Processes (ISBN-13: 978-0792395836 published 1995). I would not recommend to those interested only in this sub-topic - and who already own DSP - to purchase this new textbook as not much new will be gained. Nevertheless, the new inductee into the stochastic process world will be well served by this excellent update.

When dealing with a very difficult or aggressive person, remember that even if you are confrontational on the outside, stay cool on the inside. When we see a person being difficult or acting aggressively, we often recognize external characteristics such as anger, excessive need for control and power, arrogance, manipulation, and defensiveness. On the outside, these expressions might seem intimidating and suppressing, as they are meant to be. But when we look deeper into the true nature of such behaviors, we will find that underneath the intimidating and difficult exterior, and behind all the hostile energy, is a set of much more vulnerable emotions. * Behind excessive, compulsive, or pathological anger, we often find a person whose inner life has sadness, pain, or grief. * Behind excessive and overbearing manifestations of control, manipulation, power, and arrogance, we commonly find a person who on the inside feels fearful, insecure, or inadequate. * Behind excessive defensiveness, we commonly find an inner vulnerability. Most people who are chronically difficult and/or aggressive do so because they have one or more of these vulnerable "core" emotions on the inside. The core emotions usually have something to do with certain negative experiences from the past. To the extent that a person is unable to face up and deal with his negative experiences, he can sometimes, unconsciously, decide to lash out at others in order to bring a sense of equanimity with his inner fear and pain. By hurting others through aggressive behavior, an aggressive person gets to feel better about him or herself, with the twisted satisfaction that someone else is also suffering. As the old saying goes: "misery loves company". In this twisted way an aggressors innermost feelings are validated, and he gets to feel better about himself and his own inner suffering. "When you get angry, Hell is born. Anger makes you suffer a lot, and not only do you suffer, but the people you love also suffer at the same time. "

-Paramhansa Yogananda Many excessively difficult and aggressive people are too afraid to be willing to look within and uncover the unpleasant origins of their behavior. It's much easier to hurt others than to examine the true nature of one's own suffering. Why stay cool in the face of a difficult person? When you lose your cool and get emotional on the inside, you play right into the hands of the aggressor, for you have allowed that person to pull your emotion like a puppet on strings. You give that person the satisfaction of knowing that he or she can have power over you. The aggressor takes delight in seeing you suffer. When you lose your cool, you become weaker because you are reactive to the aggressor's provocation. You allow your "buttons" to be pushed, and in the process you either sink to the level of the person you're dealing with, or you leave yourself wide open to an aggressor's intimidation, manipulation, and exploitation. Stay cool. Don't let others' negative emotions or aggressive behavior get to you.
