About the Author
Eric W. Noreen is a globe-trotting academic who has held appointments at institutions in the United States, Europe, and Asia. He is currently Professor of Accounting at the University of Washington and Visiting Price Waterhouse Professor of Management Information & Control at INSEAD, an international graduate school of business located in France. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Washington and MBA and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. A Certified Management Accountant, he was awarded a Certificate of Distinguished Performance by the Institute of Certified Management Accountants. 

Peter C. Brewer is a professor in the Department of Accountancy at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. He holds a BS degree in accounting from Penn State University, an MS degree in accounting from the University of Virginia, and a PhD from the University of Tennessee. He has published 30 articles in a variety of journals including: Management Accounting Research, the Journal of Information Systems, Cost Management, Strategic Finance, the Journal of Accountancy, Issues in Accounting Education, and the Journal of Business Logistics. Professor Brewer is a member of the editorial boards of Issues in Accounting Education and the Journal of Accounting Education. His article “Putting Strategy into the Balanced Scorecard” won the 2003 International Federation of Accountants’ Articles of Merit competition and his articles “Using Six Sigma to Improve the Finance Function” and “Lean Accounting: What’s It All About?” were awarded the Institute of Management Accountants’ Lybrand Gold and Silver Medals in 2005 and 2006. He has received Miami University’s Richard T. Farmer School of Business Teaching Excellence Award and has been recognized on two occasions by the Miami University Associated Student Government for “making a remarkable commitment to students and their educational development.” He is a leading thinker in undergraduate management accounting curriculum innovation and is a frequent presenter at various professional and academic conferences.Prior to joining the faculty at Miami University, Professor Brewer was employed as an auditor for Touche Ross in the firm’s Philadelphia office. He also worked as an internal audit manager for the Board of Pensions of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He frequently collaborates with companies such as Harris Corporation, Ghent Manufacturing, Cintas, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Schneider Electric, Lenscrafters, and Fidelity Investments in a consulting or case writing capacity.

Ray H. Garrison is emeritus Professor of Accounting at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Brigham Young University and his D.B.A. degree from Indiana University. As a certified public accountant, Professor Garrison has been involved in management consulting work with both national and regional accounting firms. He has published articles in The Accounting Review, Management Accounting, and other professional journals. Innovation in the classroom has earned Professor Garrison the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Teaching Award from Brigham Young University.

When faced with an ethical dilemma, should we seek solutions that offer the greatest good or happiness to the greatest number of people? Are there any universal laws or principles by which ethical conduct should be governed? From what sources are ethical principles derived? Cambridge philosopher Blackburn addresses these and other questions in this straightforward introduction to ethics, a companion to his Think: A Compelling Introduction to Philosophy. In part one, he considers seven subjects religion, relativism, evolutionary theory, egoism, determinism, unreasonable demands and false consciousness "that seem to suggest that ethics is somehow impossible." For example, relativism (the idea there is no one truth but different truths), he argues, often ends in nihilism, or the notion that there are indeed no values and no truth. Next, Blackburn discusses several ethical theories, including deontology (the theory that our ethical actions must be governed by rules) and utilitarianism (the theory that our ethical actions must be governed by their consequences), as well as rights theories and Kant's categorical imperative, which elevates duty to universal law. In a final section, Blackburn suggests that neither Kant, rights theories, deontology or utilitarianism provide adequate grounds for being good. Rather, he argues, "ethical principles are those that would be agreed in any reasonable cooperative procedure for coming to one mind about our conduct." Unfortunately, Blackburn never develops his idea about a common point of view for judging our conduct (he doesn't explain, for instance, how such a cooperative transaction can take place when partners in the conversation are using different ethical languages), and that is where this little book, which is so rich in analysis, falters significantly. I began Nonsense with great enthusiasm. For the first 25 pages or so, I was enthralled. But by page 100, it became clear that this book was primarily a collection of well-written anecdotes and paraphrases of published research. Together these made for snippets of interesting reading- and interesting tidbits to share at social functions. But they weren't powerful enough to overcome the overall lack of a meaningful point.Ultimately, Holmes offers some wise cautions against rushing headlong into decision. For instance:"When making a decision, make a habit of consciously considering your stress level at the time. Are you feeling rushed? Are you tired? Are you having personal problems? Formalize reminders of how different kinds of anxiety affect your decisions and the consequences of those judgments" (80).Certainly this is good advise, but it doesn't warrant an entire book. An article would suffice.

This book definitely wanders. I'd actually like to know more about what the author believes, and not just a bunch of anecdotes. It doesn't seem like he bothers to tie everything together in a way that makes sense. It's okay to have a lot of qualitative evidence and stories...but at least connect the dots? I loved an NPR interview that I read with Holmes but the book just did not live up to expectations.

It's a nice fresh topic: How does uncertainly and ambiguity affect us? The studies that Holmes covers are also relatively new and definitely interesting. The real stumbling block for me is that the book often jumped around and was divided into so many little sections that it was difficult to maintain momentum and interest.

This is a pleasant read, though not very deep. I feel the book could have been reduced to a third of its actual length. Still it has some important insights that, anyhow, have been developed much better elsewhere, viz, Fogelin's "Walking the tightrope of Reason..."

I loved Jamie Holmes writing style because I love Malcolm Gladwell's. Engaging, immersive anecdotes that reveal the major themes at deeper and deeper levels. Extremely well researched. Once I was done reading the book, I started reading it again from the beginning to let the themes sink in at a deeper level. This book has important implications for how we teach our children. Do our students always expect problems to have one clear answer? Based on most classrooms, the answer is "yes." How do we prepare our students for the ambiguity of the real world? I am discussing this book with my teaching colleagues for how to change our classrooms.

Holmes employs a wide range of sources to illustrate his ideas in this provocative book....I mean, spies, scientists, shrinks, artists and especially brilliant storytellers. The view that acknowledged uncertainty is the closest we often get to "knowing" is both satisfying and challenging. I will now read this again! A true intellectual thrill.

This was our book group selection for Sunday January 17, 2016. We did enjoy the book and the discussion though a larger than normal number of us were absent for not reading the book or travel purposes. I found it amazing how focused many were on the 15 questions that are supposed to measure how tolerant you are of ambiguity. I found the questions too ambiguous to be valuable especially since they are self-graded questions. How ambiguous that makes it! When pressed I chose three as my rating for me for all of them giving me a score of 45. But even in the discussion ensuing I found everyone taking the questions in such ambiguous ways that what was most obvious was that all of the members of the group were really very comfortable with ambiguity. Considering they are also all members of the Anchorage Unitarian Universalist Fellowship – perhaps the sect with the most ambiguous principles – that should not have been in doubt. So what is the take away of this interesting selection of stories about how individuals more tolerant of ambiguity end up doing better in certain situations? From events like Waco, finding Nazis, selling clothing, and dealing with cultural differences, the measures seem to indicate more power to those who are either genetically predisposed to deal with cognitive dissonance well instead of getting angry or antsy to those who perhaps can learn to have such an acceptance disposition by learning multiple languages (perhaps the most interesting chapter to me) we get the sense that acceptance of complexity is the more mature, more progressive, characteristic to have.

Another book I started a while ago and just finished, ProBlogger: Secrets for Blogging Your Way to a Six-Income Figure isn't very long or very complicated; it makes for a good, quick read about blogging.If you don't know ProBlogger, you should, at least if you're interested in blogging: it's the go-to blog about blogs. Yes, I love meta and the word "blog" will come frequently in this post.In any case, as I left the academic world and decided to try something new, I thought about starting blogs for money. I love to write, I seem to be pretty good at managing and producing content, and I'm sure there are things I could share with the world... for a profit.The book goes through the three steps of making money from blogs: Setting up a blog Making it popular Earning money from itThe most important lesson I got from the book is the importance of choosing a niche; it helps build a loyal community, get expertise and great, contextualized advertising. However, except for the generic "start by identifying your own interests, passions, and energy levels for topics", there's not a lot of direction about how to choose a profitable niche. There also isn't much about search engine optimization (which I fortunately covered in another book) or about keyword research. However, a lot of the things that Rowse and Garrett hold important (niching, ads, etc) aren't necessarily the be-all and end-all of popular blogging.The one section I found really useful was the monetizing section where the authors explain all about choosing the right ads, affiliate programs and other revenue streams. While I'm sure there's more complete info on this (it could be worth an entire book), it was a good introduction and gave me guidelines if I ever have to do something like this myself.In general I found ProBlogger interesting and informative, even if it doesn't delve too deep into any of the topics the authors touch on. Even the case study in the last chapter lacked depth-I would have liked to know more about how he managed his content, built a community, etc. But as an introduction to professional blogging, it does the job.

If you are blogging to make money and haven't read this book, you are in for a treat! Co-authors Darren Rowse and Chris Garrett lay out all of the details that the aspiring blogger needs in order to begin earning money at blogging. The book also pulls no punches in telling the readers how much work they will have to put in and how remarkable their blogs really must be to draw advertising dollars. Professional blogging is indeed full-time work, make no mistake. Darren and Chris have created in this manual a detailed roadmap for new and experienced bloggers alike who might have unique idea for a blog and enough passion and material about the topic for the long haul. I've got a blog and now I have a million new ideas about how to make the blog more "can't live without it" for my current subscribers and how to reel in more new readers. The book is an easy and enjoyable read. I read the entire thing in one cross-country flight. The sections of their book that I found most useful were the chapters on income and earning strategies, how to write a blog, blogging for a niche, blog networks, blog promotion and marketing, and the secrets of successful blogging. If you're a blogger, this is a book you shouldn't be without. The authors make all of their income from blogging and this book brightly lights the way for the anyone who aspires to be a pro blogger.

After reading this, I found it to be a good resource for the beginning to intermediate blogger. There is a lot of content that is blindingly obvious for anyone who has been blogging for even a short period of time, but the author's have managed to include topics that even intermediate bloggers will find useful.I have been running a relatively successful blog for over a year now with great traffic, but I have failed to monetize it. I was hoping this book would help me figure out that part of the equation. It did help add some perspective to structuring content to pull in more readers, while also doing the whole SEO thing.To those reviewers who complained that this info could be found on a variety of websites about blogging, that claim could be made about most books sold on Amazon. The purpose of going out to buy the book is convenience and reliability of information. If you want to spend days or weeks looking for and collating the same information, by all means, have at it. If you want it in a convenient package, then get this book.My only complaint, would be the price. I'd barely pay $12 for the paperback, so I'd hoped the Kindle version would be around the $10 mark. Seems a bit pricey for a digital download.

If you're new to the blogosphere then this book is brilliant, but if you're already somewhat experienced then you need to start looking elsewhere. It's really just all the blogging basics in one tome, but as far as building strategies it lacks a little bit. I do recommend it to anyone who wants to start they're own blog or has done it already and has yet to learn a little.
