In the fall of 1988, we taught a course on observation in the early childhood classroom, and therein we sowed the seeds of the first edition of Through the Looking Glass. The third edition you hold in your hands is the product of our continued commitment to write a book on observation that unites solid methodological instruction with a broad understanding of children's development. We have found that learning how to observe while also paying close attention to what to observe encourages educational practitioners to use their skills to full potential. This book maintains a close relationship between observing, understanding what one observes, and improving the educational curriculum and environment.

NEW TO THIS EDITION

Because our goal in Through the Looking Glass is to integrate observation and child development within a professional context, we have included several helpful features in the text. As the material we wanted to include in Chapter 1 grew, we decided to develop it into two chapters for more manageable digestion. We are excited about the information about professional development in Chapter 1, including the reader's responsibilities and an introduction to professional organizations, developmentally appropriate practice, and ethical conduct in early childhood education. The second chapter turns to the more nuts-and-bolts issues of finding the time to observe, learning the basics of observation, and minimizing subjectivity. All our chapters now end with two reflections: one personal and one ethical. We hope these reflections will help our readers integrate information into their personal storehouses of knowledge and connect their daily work with our professional values as early childhood educators. Chapters 3 and 4, describing highlights of development during the preschool and primary grade years, have been updated and serve to establish a common ground of information for both knowledgeable and novice readers in the field of child development. Our "Growth Indicators" of child development from these two chapters are concrete guides to what to observe and are reprinted in Appendix A for easy access. In each chapter presenting an observational method, we offer two detailed examples, one preschool and one primary grade, to model how educators effectively study issues in classrooms, interpret the data, and initiate follow-through plans. Brief vignettes at the beginning of each chapter ask the reader to ponder a question or problem that anticipates the chapter's content. "Practice Activities" and "Off on Your Own" provide abundant opportunities to add to the reader's expertise in the observational process, and our new "Quick Reviews" at the ends of most chapters serve to underscore the major points.

On completion of the original manuscript, we flipped a coin to determine the first author's name. We hope our readers remember that the order was set by chance and is a fair reflection of the teamwork that produced Through the Looking Glass.

Osho has always put things in beautiful perspective for me. This book is nothing short of this, it goes into our cultural paradigm that gives sex a negative association and how that affects our behaviors. The book came in brand new condition. Its not heavy so it is convenient to bring with for a thoughtful read to question our mundane life views. My friend had the newer version of this book, which was shorter and larger print and quicker of a read. I enjoyed this version more because it has enough content to get see how Osho expands in different topics which was very insightful.

Take your sex-life to the next level. A spiritual connection in sex makes an exponential difference. It is well-written, does not come off as preachy, or too "woo-woo." Truly mind-blowing... in more ways than one!

We have to think over about this book.Sometimes easy to understand but not easy to digest.A completely different approach .

I'm only 3/4 of the way through the book, so take this with a grain of salt, but I really, really, LOVE this book. I mean, it's everything I've been looking for-and more. Osho explains things so simply. It's kind of like a how-to for sexual superconsciousness. Unlike one reviewer mentioned, he doesn't actually talk about sex not mattering. It's more of him saying that once you get to a certain point, you can achieve the same feeling as orgasm, without actually having sex.I'm almost done with it, but figured I had read enough to know that I love this book, and can't wait to purchase more of his works.

A lucid presentation of reality of human nature and the link between the physical (sexual) and the spiritual . the metaphor of the river of love connecting the two banks of physical lust and divine love is telling. This should be mandatory reading for all ages- Young adults onwards.

Good "translation" from the dialect; each story roughly 2.5 pages long; just right for reading to a child (or oneself) at bedtime. These stories have gotten caught in pc battles, and that's a shame because they are part of our cultural literacy.

Julius Lester's retelling take all of the cheesy language and 19th century ideas of race in the Harris telling, and retells Uncle Remus' stories in a hilarious but respectful way. These are funny, entertaining and empowering tales. Hint: read the story to yourself and figure out the wording before reading it aloud.

The stories my grandma told me time and again as a child. Was so happy to find this book on amazon, and share the same stories with my children too. They are tried and true stories, that hold my childrens attention and they have fun listening to them.

I was brought up as a toddler listening to my mother read me the tales of Brer Rabbit. It may not be the most popular book on the market because of it's political correctness thing, but these characters are lovable and my grandson loved them. If you remember the Disney movie, "The Song of the South," it was made around the books' characters.

Far from dismissing opinion-makers in the pulpit, Numbers closely looks at two the most influential Protestant theologians in nineteenth-century America: Charles Hodge and William Henry Green. Green, on the basis of his careful biblical studies, concluded that Ussher's chronology was unreliable, thus opening the door for Christian anthropologists to accommodate the subsequent discovery of human antiquity.

By the early nineteenth century this practice was becoming the defining characteristic of science; in the late twentieth century it became the central point of attack in the audacious attempt of intelligent designers to redefine science. Numbers ends his reassessment by arguing that although science has markedly changed the world we live in, it has contributed less to secularizing it than many have claimed.
Taken together, these accessible and authoritative essays form a perfect introduction to Christian attitudes towards science since the 17th century.

James Holland is a Barrister, Professor of Employment Law, and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Business and Law at the University of the West of England, Bristol. He is also co-author of Employment Law 2013, LPC Guide (OUP, 2013).

Julian Webb is Professor of Legal Education at the University of Warwick and Senior Associate Research Fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. He is currently leading the research team engaged with the Legal Education and Training Review (LETR).
