Michael F. McTear Michael McTearMichael McTear is Emeritus Professor at the University of Ulster with a special research interest in spoken language technologies. He graduated in German Language and Literature from Queens University Belfast in 1965, was awarded MA in Linguistics at University of Essex in 1975, and a PhD at the University of Ulster in 1981. He has been Visiting Professor at the University of Hawaii (1986-87), the University of Koblenz, Germany (1994-95), and University of Granada, Spain (2006- 2010). He has been researching in the field of spoken dialogue systems for more than fifteen years and is the author of the widely used textbook Spoken dialogue technology: toward the conversational user interface (Springer, 2004). He also is a co-author (with Kristiina Jokinen) of the book Spoken Dialogue Systems, (Morgan and Claypool, 2010), and (with Zoraida Callejas) of the book Voice Application Development for Android (Packt Publishing, 2013).Zoraida CallejasZoraida Callejas is Associate Professor at the University of Granada, Spain, and member of the CITIC-UGR Research Institute. She graduated in Computer Science in 2005, and was awarded a PhD in 2008, also at the University of Granada. Her research is focused on dialogue systems, especially on affective human-machine conversational interaction, and she has made more than 160 contributions to books, journals and conferences. She has participated in several research projects related to these topics and contributes to scientific committees and societies in the area.  She has been Visiting Professor at the Technical University of Liberec, Czech Republic (2007-13), University of Trento, Italy (2008), University of Ulster, Northern Ireland (2009), Technical University of Berlin, Germany (2010), University of Ulm, Germany (2012, 2014) and ParisTech, France (2013). Mark Webber is a former Formula One driver who raced for Minardi, Jaguar, Williams, and Red Bull. He was twice winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, as well as the British and Brazilian Grands Prix. I bought this for a class. It's a good read. I have quite a bit of experience already, but found this a valuable read and will be keeping it in my office for reference in the future. I found that sometimes it seemed like they went over the same material multiple times. I think they could have streamlined it honestly, but that's ok. Maybe that is more helpful for a beginner.I actually haven't been able to keep this in my office. One of the manufacturing engineers that reports to me has been reading it during lunches. We are also planning a VS mapping event soon so the plant manager borrowed it earlier this week to copy the symbols so we could cut them out and use to paper doll doing some pre-work. It's a great buy. I actually also bought the office version of this book but haven't started it yet. My department is growing and reorganizing so it was a good time to look at that.

I use this book in my lean manufacturing class. It has good practical examples and a useful method for doing lean using the value stream mapping approach. I highly receommend this book for the first timers. I think someone who has no experience could get started using this book.

CD was missing. But other than that, great condition.

VSM books shows interesting process to apply modern control thinking to production. However, clear products standardisation & determination process could be necessary before methods can be applied as well as possible.Discussed waste elimination is generally nice approach. Waste elimination possibilities in organisations should to be evaluated with this book and more generally at lean bibliography, because elimination of waste helps almost everybody. :)

This is a 'lean' book -- it has no fat, no excess words. Yet it's comprehensive enough to guide someone through all the basics of lean. It provides step-by-step instructions, with good examples, and lots of forms. And it is easy, almost pleasant, to read. I bought it because the other reviews were very favorable, and they were right.

Haven't really read it, but I am sure it is riveting.

What I found most beneficial in this book were the ready to use forms/worksheets/templates that I used with my lean team immediately. As a supervisor, this gives the structure for implementing lean, just what is needed, when it is needed. Lean design and very, very practical!
